| I was called a terrorist
yesterday, but when I came out of jail, many people embraced me, including my enemies, and
that is what I normally tell other people who say those who are struggling for liberation
in their country are terrorists. I tell them that I was also a terrorist yesterday, but,
today, I am admired by the very people who said I was one: Nelson Mandela - Larry King
Live, May 16, 2000 Shortly after the
terrorist attack on the USA on September 11, 2001, Russian President Putin
stated: “Terrorism and religious extremism of various denominations today
pose the main threat to peace.” - Vladimir Putin

In other words, it isn't enough to fight the
alligators; we must drain the swamp. Medieval
Islamic scholars divided the world into two spheres - Dar ul Islam (the land of Islam) and
Dar ul Harb (the land of war). In the first sphere Muslims lived under Sharia and Islamic
rulers. In the second they lived in a hostile state ruled over by the infidel. Later
scholars devised a third definition, Dar ul Ahd, which means the sphere of covenant of
security. In such a place the Muslim population was a minority but the non-Muslim
government was not considered to be hostile. Muslims could live peacefully and were
required to obey the law of the land.
The Land of Israel
(Eretz Yisrael,) is the region which, according to the Bible, was promised
by God to the descendants of Abraham through his son Isaac and to the
Israelites, descendants of Jacob, Abraham's grandson. It constitutes the
Promised Land and forms part of the Abrahamic, Jacob and Israel covenants.
Mainstream Jewish tradition regards the promise as applying to all Jews,
including descendants of converts. The Biblical definitions of Eretz Israel
have encompassed different wider regions over time; the actual areas of
those biblical regions are also subject to differences of opinion.
Our country is waging a difficult battle
against international terrorism, which has blatantly thrown down the
gauntlet before us. This is a fight for the life of the people of Russia,
many of whom we lost in Moscow and Dagestan, in Volgodonsk and Buynaksk.
This is a fight for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Russian
Federation. It is also part of the international community’s effort against
international terrorism. I am sure that those in the West who for some
reason have still not understood this will be convinced that we are in the
right. International terrorism has no borders. It now has the whole world in
its sights. - Boris Yeltsin, December 1999 |

Goals |
|
|
- Armageddon
- Causing disorder, undermine the myth that
state can protect individuals
- Desire for revenge (some humiliation or
injustice)
- Ending of a government policy or occupation
- Internal dynamics of organization, like any
other organization
|
|
- Provoke the government to forcefully
retaliate, alienating the public, creating more recruits
- Publicity (killing of Israeli Olympic team)
- Release of comrades (despite public denials,
most governments will negotiate)
- Show of strength, after the capture of
leader, etc.
