Dr. P.K. Iyengar, chairman of the Atomic Energy
Commission told a seminar, that there were possibilities of extracting nuclear fuel from
the surface of moon. The US and USSR are seriously considering mining the moon's surface
for Helium-3, an isotope of helium not found on earth. Helium 3 does not leave radioactive
waste behind when used as nuclear fuel. It becomes ordinary helium, giving off energy in
the process. The moon's surface has millions of tons of Helium-3 and both superpowers had
plans to stockpile it. |
